Scholarship Program
Scholarship Amount:Ten $1,500 Scholarships
Purpose:Provide scholarships to students who are the children of active duty, inactive/active-duty reserves or retired military personnel (to grade Captain/Colonel equivalent), resale personnel (NEXCOM, DECA, Coast Guard, AAFES, Marine Corps) or ALA members who reside in the Hampton Roads Area.
The scholarship will be awarded based upon academic achievement, personal qualifications and accomplishments, participation in both school-oriented and outside activities, demonstrated interests, and financial need. They will be awarded without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin.
The scholarship will be disbursed in a single payment to the institution of higher learning that the recipient attends.
ELIGIBILITY
Must be the natural or legally adopted child of active-duty, inactive/active-duty reserves or retired military personnel or resale employees to grade Captain/Colonel equivalent and/or grade 12 or members of the Hampton Roads ALA who reside in the Hampton Roads area.
Must be in the last year of high school and scheduled to graduate and attend college during the subsequent year. Those who have already graduated are not eligible to apply.
Must plan to attend an accredited college or university for undergraduate studies. Scholarships will not be awarded for participation in non-academic and certificate programs or attendance at a tuition -free institution such as the U.S. Military Academy.
Must be a permanent U.S. resident and be less than 21 years of age.
Applicant should be in the top 35% of their high school class and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale).
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Following information is required for application process. Deadline is April 1, 2010.
Attached application must be completely filled out.
Copy of Federal Tax Form 1040 must be included for all any person providing financial support of applicant.
Copy of transcript must be included with application and must include first semester of senior year. Class rank should also be noted.
Copy of SAT or ACT test results
Two letters of recommendation from faculty and/or community leaders
Short essay explaining what you hope to achieve in your college career, including educational, professional, and personal goals.
Following the initial screening of applications, finalists may be interviewed by the selection committee.
Winning applicant will be awarded scholarship check at a special reception in May 2010. ATTENDANCE AT THIS EVENT IS MANDATORY.
